In the Fall of 2011 the Bellamy Woods Civic League created the new position of "Board Associate". This is an opportunity for one or more high school students who are residents of the Bellamy Woods community to participate in the governance, committee work, and activities of their Civic League.
The term of office is for one year, starting in October. Board Associates are expected to become fully engaged in the discussion, decisions and administration of the organization. They are considered equal members of our Board in all matters except for recorded votes. The Bellamy Woods Civic League benefits from the perspective of younger residents, and in exchange it endeavors to provide the student(s) with real responsibility and exposure to managing a large community membership organization. Students interested in this position should send an email to any Board member in August or September - an announcement will also be printed in the newsletter.
Mr. David Kennedy of Larkwood Drive and Mr. Long-Quan Pham of Brattleboro Arch were our first students to apply for the new position. They each spoke to the General Membership at the October 26, 2011 meeting, and they were both elected unanimously.
For the second year of the program Mr. Long-Quan Pham was re-elected, and his brother Minh-Quan Pham joined him on the Board.
Long-Quan was a sophomore in the IB program at Princess Anne High School. He wrestled, was in the JROTC program, and was involved in chess and other school activities. His first year as a Board Associate gave him a chance to learn more about our community, and he wanted to expand his service during a second year.
Minh-Quan was a Junior at Ocean Lakes High School. He was a member of the Latin Honor Society and the chess club, participated in the Scholastic Bowl, and was on the wrestling team. He wanted to help make his neighborhood a better place while learning about local government.
Since their elections in October 2012 both young men have attended numerous meetings, learned a great deal about issues that are affecting their neighborhood, participated in our debates and decisions, and contributed their thoughts and ideas. We look forward to their continued involvement and to more of the mutual benefits the Board Associate initiative is yielding.
In June of 2014, Minh-Quan Pham left our program to pursue his college search.
In the spring of 2014, Briana Bullard, daughter of former BWCL Vice President, Kyle Bullard, joined the board. Briana has joined us at several league general membership meetings and contributed to the discussions on relevant topics with our residents. Briana left the board in the summer of 2015 to pursue her college application process.
In the fall of 2015 Jacob Kennedy joined the board as our newest board associate. We welcome Jacob to the Board!
